In shedding the dense narratives of Janelle Monáe's previous work, Dirty Computer doesn’t feel like a retread, but a refinement, exploring themes of identity, suppression and persecution. Call it a sign of the times, but perhaps Monáe feels less reason to couch herself in metaphor.
